Matthew was about to step into the barn’s interior when he heard a feminine voice. “So you’re going through with it, are you?”

Matthew gritted his teeth. It was that pesky journalist… again. He applauded her zeal and could only sympathize with her views on “dirty boxing”, but she was becoming a serious thorn in his side!

Stopping, he turned around and grinned as the lady practically fell into his arms. “Oooomph!” she gasped and stepped away from him, brushing her skirts and adjusting her hat in embarrassment.

“I’m very sorry!” she murmured. Then her brows drew together in suspicion. “But… you did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

Matthew grinned. “It seemed that you wanted to open a dialogue with me, Mrs.…”

She glared for a moment, and then held out an ink-stained hand to shake. “Annie Thurston. Miss Annie Thurston, journalist for the Spokane Journal.” *

Matthew knew, suddenly, who he was talking to. The Spokane Journal was a new paper in the Spokane area and in hot competition with its rival, The Spokesman Review. It was run by an eccentric millionaire named Clyde Thurston. This woman’s father, perhaps, or brother? Matthew wondered.

“Well, Miss Thurston… I am very busy right at this moment. As you can see, the fight is about to start and I have a large stake in the outcome.”

She sniffed and said, “Yes. I just bet you do.”

Matthew winced. “Listen, if things go the way I hope, I would be happy to give you a report for your paper. If not… well, I would appreciate it if you kept your opinion of me and my son to yourself!”

Annie, who was starting to flounce away, stopped and looked back at him. Her cheeks were red from Matthew’s sharp words, but she was undeterred in her opinion of a man who would pit his own son in a death match against a bully and a cheat.

“Oh…” she promised. “You’ll be hearing from me, Sir, one way or the other!”

Matthew stared after the outraged woman as she marched away into the crowd and sighed. He could only hope that she was smart enough to keep her mouth shut until this travesty of a boxing match was at an end.

He needed indisputable truth, a pair of boxing gloves as hard as bricks from an illegal substance and a healthy son to swear expert testimony, if this sting was going to succeed… not some loud-mouthed journalist screaming her suspicions from the roof-tops.

Matthew searched for Annie for a moment, and then started when the bell rang. He rushed as close to the ropes as he could get and stood on his tip-toes to see over the top of the cheering fans in front of him. To his dismay, the only thing Matthew could see was Svenson’s leering face as he loped across the ring in Chance’s direction.

Judicial use of a boot-heel here and a well-placed elbow there, placed Matthew close to ring-side, just in time to see Snake-Eyes launch a straight-right at his son’s face.

Matthew cringed but he needn’t have worried… Chance ducked and stepped inside Svenson’s reach.
